Biography
Alexander Mathis is assistant professor at the Brain Mind Institute of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), working at the intersection of computational neuroscience and machine learning. His group studies the statistics of behaviour and how the brain creates behaviour, with a current focus on theories of proprioception and motor control. The lab also develops widely used machine-learning tools for behavioural analysis, including DeepLabCut, hBehaveMAE and WildCLIP, and uses insights from the brain to tackle hard problems such as motor-skill learning. His work has been recognised with the Robert Bing Prize, the Eric Kandel Young Neuroscientists Prize, the Frontiers of Science Award and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship.
